STEAM week success inspires our super scientists!
STEAM week is a huge success
The children were immersed in science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematical experiments this week as staff delivered a fantastic STEAM week. The excitement, engagement and enthusiasm has been inspirational to see.
EYFS from CVPS are the first to visit Walker’s Urban Mushroom Farm! We are so proud of the children, staff and parents who were the first ever school visitors to Walker’s Urban Mushroom Farm on Thursday this week.
Accelerated Reader programme is our highlight of this week.
Accelerated Reader Programme
Our children are becoming more immersed in reading than ever before! Staff were trained this week for the implementation of the Accelerated Reader (AR) programme after a full review of many reading schemes. Already harnessed by the local high school, we chose AR because it has been so successful at inspiring children to read. There are quizzes
at the end of reading every book, and the programme allows us to carefully monitor pupil’s reading abilities while they have a wider range of choice of reading materials, more loosely based around their ability. The focus is very definitely on providing reading material that aligns more carefully with children’s interests and the quizzes ensures the
understanding and themes in the books are adequately understood. We are delighted to be cataloguing all the books we currently have over the next week but would welcome any parent helpers if you can spare any time!
Welcome back to World Book Day and Y5/6 introduction to politics!
World Book Day 2019
As always parents (and children) did themselves proud as they dressed as an array of favourite characters on Thursday. It was great to see the enthusiasm from the children about their chosen characters and wonderful that so many of them were able to bring their books! Thank you so much for all your support both with costumes and books. Year 6 held a book sale/swap too which was so successful we plan to repeat it in the future. So lovely to see the kindness of the children towards one another as some children came unprepared for the book sale and had not remembered about costume day either.
Families, fashion and fun in the run up to half term! A huge well done to the children in nursery and reception classes this week as they wholeheartedly threw themselves into parading around in their recycled fashion creations. They did exceptionally well at such a young age and were a credit to their families, and the staff who helped them prepare to perform their fashion show on Thursday. We were so appreciative of all the families who came in to support their children too as there was a great attendance from all families.
Our mid-year assessment time is here! This week the children have all been busy with assessment tasks throughout the school. The end of the February half term is mid way through the school year and we use our mid year review assessments to celebrate the great achievements being made. This helps us to give pupils positive feedback, as well as to highlight target areas for individuals to work on. All the children from Y2 upwards have their own records that they use to track their targets. Ask them if they know their reading targets – and remind them to check targets if they can’t yet remember!
A week of judo for everyone! Thanks to Y3 staff for supplying photos of the exciting activities they
have encountered this week. Leaders in school completed their half
termly lesson observations of all the staff this week. This is always a
privilege and gives us an insight into the many aspects of learning that
take place at CVPS. We see a wide range of interesting and innovative
teaching approaches that our children respond very well too. Our
school is always an inspiring and energising place to be – even in the
cold, dark month of January.
2019 The CVPS Year of The Book! This week the children wholeheartedly joined in with the launch of our whole school reading opportunity which will take place every Wednesday. This gives everyone, including me(!) a great chance to read any book of their choice, then briefly share with a partner what they enjoyed about the book they have chosen.
Another busy week at CVPS with plenty going on. Sports have featured highly as we welcomed external rugby trainer Bear who is always popular with the children. There was also pilates facilitated by an expert – something for everyone! Class teachers also have a range of experiences that they share with the children – highlighting tricky gymnastics across year groups.
We welcome 2019 with a week of expeditions.
“Why is clean and green our perfect dream?” has seen an exciting start to the new calendar year. From Sunderland to Alnwick, beaches, farms and museums, our children have run up yet more miles as they investigate, research and discover interesting facts that keep their learning alive. We were really proud that after weeks of badgering, our Y6 pupils were lucky enough to be the very first school to visit Cramlington’s Biomass Energy facility – watch out for the photos in the papers!
